Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ropar organized Field day on Kitchen gardening at village Mahlan. The farmers were encouraged to grow vegetables in the kitchen garden. The farmers brought the vegetables produced in the kitchen garden from the fields for which vegetable seed kits were given to them in September-October, 2016. The farmers of four villages viz. Mahlan, Jhallian, Bhaowal and Bhaini (adopted by KVK, Ropar) participated in the field day. They were told about the importance of vegetables and fruits for human health. They were advised to grow vegetables & fruits by using organic method of growing for producing chemical residue free vegetables. The farmers brought fruits and vegetables produced in their kitchen gardens. The competition was organized among the growers for good quality vegetables and fruits produced by them in their kitchen gardens. The good farmers were encouraged by giving prizes. The farmers producing vegetables and fruits interacted with the scientific staff of KVK for obtaining technical knowledge. The farmers gave feedback on the very good performance of the vegetable seed kits of PAU, Ludhiana, especially the Peas variety Pb.89, Radish, White turnip, Palak, multicut coriander, compact broccoli heads etc. The farmers liked these varieties as these were good both as salad and for culinary purpose. The farmers further demanded such vegetable seed kits for these adopted villages by KVK, Ropar. They were promised to make available the good quality seed of various crops in addition to the vegetable seed kits. Dr. Harinder Singh, Deputy Director (Trg.) told farmers to come forward to conduct demonstrations on kitchen garden and advanced technologies for higher production with reduced cost. Dr. Sanjeev Ahuja, SMS (Horticulture), Dr. Ashok Kumar, SMS (Plant Pathology), Dr. Purva Jaggi, SMS (Home science) and Dr. Ankurdeep kaur, SMS (Agro-forestry) advised the farmers to adopt conservation techniques for higher productivity and nutritional security. During the interaction session of produce competition, the Sarpanch of village Jhallian S. Gian Singh informed that the even their foreign relatives were surprised to see brocolli in their kitchen garden and they told us some recipes of brocolli.
