KVK Ropar Organises In-Service Training on Zoonosis for Milk Societies

In a bid to enhance the health and safety standards of dairy products, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar organized an In-Service training session on zoonosis for Secretaries of Milkfed Societies. The training, held on January 15, 2025, aimed to educate dairy farmers and milk society members about the risks of zoonotic diseases and the best practices to prevent them.

Dr Satbir Singh (Deputy Director) KVK Ropar shared that Zoonotic diseases, which are infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans, pose a significant threat to public health and the training session covered various topics, including the identification of common zoonotic diseases, their transmission pathways, and preventive measures.

Dr Aparna Associate Professor (Animal Sci) shared that the training emphasized the importance of regular prophylactic vaccination, maintaining hygiene standards in dairy farms, regular health check-ups for livestock, and the proper handling and processing of milk. Participants were also educated on the symptoms of zoonotic diseases and the necessary steps to take if an outbreak occurs.

The initiative has been well-received by the milk societies, with many expressing their gratitude for the valuable knowledge and resources provided. KVK Ropar plans to conduct similar training sessions periodically to ensure the continuous improvement of health and safety practices in the dairy industry.

Training on ‘Nursery production of Agroforestry trees’ concludes at KVK Ropar

PAU- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ropar successfully conducted a vocational training programme on the ‘Nursery production of agroforestry trees’ from January 17th to 23rd, 2025, under the aegis of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and ICAR ATARI Zone 1 Ludhiana, in which fourteen farmers and rural youth from Ropar as well as nearby districts participated.

Dr. Satbir Singh, Deputy Director (Trg), KVK Ropar shared that the training programe aimed at equipping farmers with the skills required to establish and manage nurseries for a variety of agroforestry species, with a particular emphasis on Poplar,  due to its high demand and economic viability. He discussed the scope and economic benefits of poplar nursery production and encouraged the participants to adopt the same.

Dr. Ankurdeep Preety, Assisstant Professor (Agroforesrty), discussed in detail about the propagation, cultivation and management techniques of nursery raising of the Poplar and other agroforestry species such as Eucalyptus, Melia, Shisham, etc. The participants also gained hands-on experience in preparation of poplar cuttings, planting of cuttings in field, pruning , irrigation & fertilizer management, integrated pest management (IPM) practices, and marketing strategies. The training aimed to ensure that participants can produce high-quality poplar nursery and other agroforestry species to meet market demands and earn higher income.

Deputy Commissioner Sh. Himanshu Jain, IAS Visits Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar

In a significant move to bolster agricultural development and support local farmers, Sh. Himanshu Jain, IAS, Deputy Commissioner of Ropar, visited Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ropar on December 16, 2024.

Accompanied by Dr. Satbir Singh, Deputy Director, KVK Ropar, Sh. Jain explored various innovative agricultural services provided by KVK, including laboratories, and demonstration units at KVK office premises and farm. He showed particular interest in the availability of PAU and KVK publications, which is pivotal for sustainable farming practices. Additionally, he evaluated the promotion of oilseeds, millets and pulses in technology park highlighting their potential to improve crop diversity and soil health.

The visit also included a comprehensive discussion on agroforestry, horticulture and livestock units. Sh. Jain inquisitively enquired about the poplar cultivation, nutrition garden, bee keeping, breeds of livestock, importance of non-conventional feed resources like Azolla and silage for livestock nutrition, which could play a vital role in enhancing the livelihood of local farmers.

Concluding his visit, Sh. Jain expressed his appreciation for the efforts of KVK Ropar in developing multifarious success stories and commitment to support initiatives that uplift the agricultural sector in the region. His visit signifies a step forward in reinforcing the collaboration between government bodies and agricultural institutions to achieve sustainable and progressive farming practices.
